”And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; …but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
Which god or God do you serve, today?
In the Bible, there is the Supreme Being, the one true God. He is God. He said: “Let there be light: and there was light.” (Genesis 1:3) He is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. He is the God who calmed the sea and walked on water; who died for our sins and rose from the dead, victorious over death and the grave!—choose Him and you never will fear death again!
The Bible, however, also mentions false gods. God’s own chosen people repeatedly turned from Him and worshipped fakes, in His place! This was in spite of the fact that God, not a single one of the imposter gods, created His people and desired to bless them and establish them! Ironically, these usurping gods the people chose were out to destroy them!
Case in point, not long after God lead His people, the Israelites, out of Egyptian bondage, they turned their worship to a golden calf! Picture this: Israel’s God was on Mount Sinai giving the Ten Commandments to Moses. Our Supreme, Federal and local courts and the laws our legal system is based on, come from Biblical law, including the Ten Commandments. On that most holy occasion, God’s own people were wildly giving themselves to an animal!
Sadly, we aren’t much different.
Which god or God do you want to serve, today?
The Bible gives some detail on various gods: “…the gods of the Amorites….” (Joshua 24:15); “thy sister in law is gone back unto her people, and unto her gods [the gods of the Moabites]….” (Ruth 1:15).
The following is a list of some places, in the Bible, and the gods people served in those places. (The book of the Bible where this info is found, and the chapter and verse are listed, too, so you can look up this information yourself):
Babylon - Anammelech, Bel, Nebo and Tammuz (2Kings 17:31/Jer. 51:44/Is. 46:1/Ezek. 8:14);
Syria – Adrammelech and Rimmon (2Kings 17:31/2Kings5:18);
Canaan – Ashtoreth and Baal (Num. 25:1-9/IKings 11:7);
Moab – Baal-peor and Chemosh (Num. 25:1-9/1Kings 11:7);
Philistine – Beelzebub and Dagon (Luke 11:19-23/1Sam. 5:1-7);
Egypt – Calf worship (Ex. 32:1-6);
Greek – Diana (Acts 19:35);
Roman – Jupiter (Acts 14:12, 13);
Ammon – Milcom and Molech (1Kings 11:5/1Kings 11:7);
Assyria – Nisroch (2Kings 19:37).
Joshua 24:14 commands us: “Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth:…” If you are not serving Jesus Christ, today, then you are serving some other god. (No man can serve two masters.) Choose this day whom you will serve.
If you are interested in beginning a walk with God, your Creator (Genesis 1:1,27; John 1:3), with simple words from your heart, tell Him you’d like to have your sins forgiven. In your heart, believe that Christ died and paid for all your sins. Put all your trust and hope in Jesus Christ. (John 3:16) Then tell someone of your new trust in Christ. (Romans 10:9) And know that He promises you that He will never leave you. (Hebrews 13:5)
