”For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God.”
God loves you! Yes He does. He knows your name, your age, and all the many details about your life. He knows how many hairs are on your head and which one is number 10 and which one is number 71.
God has loved you since before time began: “…I [God] have loved thee [your name] with an everlasting LOVE: Therefore with loving kindness have I drawn thee.” Jeremiah 31:3
He knew you before your mom and dad met; before America was discovered; before He made Adam and Eve. Before He called light into being (Genesis 1:3), He knew you and loved you!
You’ve always been in His heart! For always, He’s had you in mind. Before the hospital was built, He saw your birth.
Just how does God love us? Does He mildly love us or does He care deeply, passionately about us?
Deuteronomy 4:24 says He is a consuming fire, even jealous. His love burns eternally with strong passion. Because God passionately loves us, it is no small thing when we do not return that love and find another love, instead.
Spiritually, we are in love with something. We give ourselves to it. It has our attention and our heart.
This “something” could be God or it could be a god. If it isn’t God, it’s a god.
What are some gods? The answer is practically anything: clothes, material possessions, money, food, intelligence, education…. A god is anything that takes the place of God in our lives.
Jeremiah 31:32 tells us: “…ye shall be my people and I will be your God.” God is passionate about us and wants to be our God! He wants to be the One we run to; the One we call on when our hearts are troubled. He wants to be the One to provide for all our needs (Psalm 23:1).
He wants to have first place in our hearts. He wants to be the first thing on our minds when we wake up in the morning. During the day, He wants our words and actions to reflect goodness and justice. As the day winds down, He wants our thoughts to turn to Him. In short, God wants to have a relationship with us where He is our top priority.
God is BIG. He’s been around forever. He created all things. He holds the Universe and all that’s in it together. He keeps His promises perfectly. Nothing about God is half baked. He gives 100% of Himself. When we keep Him at arms length, while giving our affection, time and attention to someone else, He is deeply offended. And our lives can have serious consequences.
What we can take away from this time in God’s Word? An important lesson: Do not take God for granted. Do not test His passionate love for you. Rather, spend time each day thanking Him for His many blessings and for all His mercy and grace in our lives. And reach out and bless others in our sphere of influence, each day.
John 3:16 tells us that whoever believes, (puts their confidence in) Jesus, will not perish [in hell], but has eternal life. Jesus is the doorway to life. Won’t you trust Him today? If you ask Him into your heart, He will enter your heart and spirit.
He’s waiting to be your God.
